Course Description:
Study of two- and three-dimensional art concepts. Lectures and selected
art projects.
Course Objectives:
The goal of this course is to provide students with a
fundamental understanding of the visual arts. We will explore how visual
elements and principles of art and design function, we shall acquire an
understanding of art within a cultural context and explore the creative
process.
This comprehensive course teaches students to use:
graphite pencil, charcoal, colored pencils and gouache – and to draw and
paint: botanical illustration, nature drawing, still life, portraits,
illustration, poster and much more.
The course is designed to give both
beginners and more experienced artists the skills necessary to maximize
their potential.
Student Expectations:
The following
expectations are to help guide you throughout this course. In meeting these
expectations and the class assignments, you will develop a mastery of the
drawing process, learn about artists, improve your problem solving,
aesthetic, and critical thinking skills and create an advanced body of
visual work. You are expected to:
• Show a level of responsibility that is
expected of college students
• Complete assignments on time
•
Demonstrate and apply knowledge of drawing and design principles in
composing visual images
• Be original in your ideas and images
• Use a
variety of techniques and methods in creating images
• Use and show a
range and depth of subject matter undertaken
• Work towards developing
an individual style in ideas and image making
• Be able to discuss and
articulate reasons for composition, content, and themes of own artwork

Analyze and evaluate the visual characteristics and content of drawings,
both historically and of personal work
• Be able to participate in the
critiques of artwork
• Visit and view art exhibits, in art museums
and galleries in person, or via on-line galleries and comment on
experiences
